Bottling Project Portfolio Management Success at Coca Cola

As the second largest bottler of Coca Cola products in the United States, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated (CCBCC) earned more than a billion dollars in sales in 2006. To be a leader in its industry, CCBCC has to rely on successful strategic planning and dedicated management of resources and time.

At the beginning of 2008, CCBCCs IT department was struggling with its ability to take on new projects. CCBCCs limited budget and resources had been allocated to several 2007 projects that were not completed as scheduled. New project initiatives are a priority of this industry-leading company and not having adequate visibility into budget and resources was unacceptable.

In 2006, CCBCC proactively formed a project office to develop process and procedure for managing key initiatives. Like many large organizations, CCBCC struggled with a lack of standardization and adherence to project management procedures. Senior managers were having difficulty gaining visibility into the budget and schedule status of their authorized projects, making it difficult to strategically plan new projects.  Download the full case study for Coca-Cola Bottling Co.
